Here is a follow up piece to my first Cambodia article (A Better Place for our Plastic Bottles). It’s called Together We Rise, after a conversation I had with my friend in LA who told me about this email she received from a fellow small business owner. I loved it so much that I wanted to use it somewhere in my work.

So you know those pricey energy balls you can buy at a certain large big box healthy supermarket? Well, you can make them on your own and its pretty easy (trust me). They are a great pre workout snack. Here is the recipe I made last weekend with Genuine Health Fermented Vegan Proteins+
Ingredients:
1 cup raw cashews
1/4 cup dried blueberries
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup dried whole coconut chips, unsweetened
1 scoop of chocolate Genuine Health Fermented Vegan Proteins+
8 soft dates, pitted
Juice and zest from one lemon
Method:
Combine all ingredients into a food processor. Blend until Combined and roll into 1 inch balls. Can be in the fridge for a week or the freezer for a month.

Truth be told Cambodia was never on my list of places to go. And leave it to a random horrible Tuesday, for me and my cousin to decide it was time to head for some tropical weather. We kicked around a few ideas and managed to land on Siem Reap, Cambodia. A few weeks later, I was washing my hands in a Shanghai airport bathroom when we reunited (the last time I saw her was in Sept in Bali) and were enroute to Siem Reap.
We were picked up at night in TukTuk complete with reusable bottles of cold water (#refillNOTlandfill initative) and cool moist towels that were very much welcomed. The TukTuk dropped us off at the beautiful oasis: Jaya House River Park Hotel.
The next day was our catch up/rest day. The salt water pool, some time around the market and back to the hotel for a spa treatment and dinner. We were pretty jet lagged and our room was so nice that we just hung out drinking loose leaf tea and catching up. In fact, the whole trip we tried to incorporate as much lounging around as possible.
The next day we visited 3 temples: Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and Bayon (seen in the movie, Tomb Raider). To say it was hot would be an understatement. It was humid and around 35 degrees celcius. I opted for workout Lululemon capris and a tank top. We were told that we needed to cover both our knees and arms, which would be fine if it wasn’t so hot. By mid day we were only covering up when asked because it was SO sweltering.
Angkor Wat is massive. You feel like you are walking forever, climbing into steep areas, down corridors and small lookout areas. My cousin and I noticed there was a slight optical illusion as you would walk down the hallway – peering down, it would look as though you were starring into a mirror. We managed to climb to the top of the steep temple (where my cousin told this foreign lady grasping to the handrail that she shouldn’t worry about me – as I work out. Hahahah) and saw how vast the entire archeological site really was. The day was filled with 3 temples, which for the mix of humidity and heat – was all we could take as we were drenched with sweat by the end of it. The night, we checked out Haven restaurant, which had a beautiful outdoor terrace.
The next day, we travelled to the countryside for a private cooking class (Countryside Cooking class). It was so much fun wandering through the market and checking out the local fares including the marinated crickets. My cousin tried them first and approved; so I took a sampling without the wings – they weren’t half bad. Almost like chips, with a salt and pepper flavor. We cooked a three-course meal including Banana Blossom Salad, Chicken Amok and for desert Banana rice cake. It was so yummy. Fresh ingredients makes all the difference. Later in the day, we checked out a pottery class that was challenging as working with a wheel is not easy as it looks. We finished the day with a casual dinner at Sinn Sisamouth Cafe and had $3 massages with $3 whiskeys with friends from the US.
The next day was a mishmash of shopping, checking out a butterfly farm, learning about landmines and the Khmer Rouge movement. I have to admit that my knowledge about this mass genocide was lacking until we travelled to the Cambodia Landmine Museum and Relief Center founded by Aki Ra (former child soldier) . The museum has a relief center where kids live and attend school nearby. In 2016, 5 students attend university in Siem Reap. After a traditional blessing with monks, we ended the day with the cheapest street meal ever: $5 for two plates of noodles and two large fresh fruit smoothies.
I made my last day complete, by indulging in a road side $1 deep friend banana.

I decided that I would take a quick trip to LA. I managed to write my very first Huff Post piece that was finally accepted on the plane entitled, “How to Survive a Mid-Flight Meltdown“. For three nights I stayed at The Standard Hollywood which had a great pool. I believe I am SO spoiled now, but the sheets and towels were rough like sandpaper 🙁
I finally went to LACMA and had an impromptu trip to the Le Brea Tarpits.
I managed to meet with some great people and had some great food at Pearl’s Roof Top, Catch and Gracias Madre. Of course, no trip to LA would be complete without at least one celeb sighting of Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian and a late night trip to In-N-Out. The Bouchon in Beverley Hills is massive and I got to reconnect with a friend from NY over some truffle popcorn and white wine. Not a bad way to end the trip.
Thanks for the Vitamin D!

I refurbished an existing piece and talked about my favourite childhood books in relation to three themes: Female empowerment, optimism and love/affection. I had to add my faves though – the Berenstain Bears and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I’ve had some great feedback that it is quite nostalgic. Read the piece here.

I always celebrate my birthday in a memorable way, be it a circus-themed party (complete with popcorn and cotton candy) or a Vancouver Aquarium dance party and dessert bar. The past few years, I have opted on travel adventures; last year was Loreto, Mexico and this year, I chose Hong Kong.
So after a lengthy 13 hour direct flight and 3 movies (Suicide Squad, Miss. Peregrines home for the peculiar and The girl on the train) I caught the Airport Express into the city and landed at my first stop, The Pottinger. With a central location, I can see why it was voted Asia’s Best City Boutique Hotel in 2014 by the World Boutique Hotels and one of Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Hotels for 2017.
Adjacent to the historic Pottinger Street, I spent a few afternoons checking out the vendors wares. They basically sold everything under the sun. I found the intimate 68-room hotel a tranquil oasis of bespoke décor with a touch of Asian flair. The beautiful pastel pink bird headboard and the blue/grey wallpaper at one of the hotel’s restaurants – Gradini Ristorante E Bar Italiano were my favourites. I loved the lobby’s sitting area decorated in full for Chinese New Year.
I love hotel welcome fruit. Welcome anything is great in my books, but after a long flight – being completely disorientated to space and time I gratefully inhaled the dragon fruit left for me. I appreciated the huge vanity, as I was able to spread out my toiletries for days! Another shout out for strong water pressure in the shower. Although I never got around to it – the soaker tub looked amazing.
When I travelled to the Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) side via the Star Ferry, I noticed there was more of the bamboo scaffolding. Although I didn’t spend much time there, the streets seemed completely crowded and there was a difference in atmosphere noted.
After three nights at the Pottinger, I stayed at the Island Shangri-La for my remaining two nights. The Island Shangri-La is situated atop Pacific Place, a high-end fashion mecca in Central’s financial district of Hong Kong Island. I got trapped looking for an ATM and passed all the wonderful stores (on my last day – I quickly did a window shop).
The entire hotel is lavish and grand with amazing panoramic views of Victoria Harbor. I managed to get to The Peak on Sunday afternoon and was slightly disappointed that my view from my room was so much better! I could have stayed in and enjoyed more of the treats (tea, chocolates, sour plum candies) – but by the time I had checked out everything was gone 😉
For some reason, I wasn’t ready for how much I would be eating and drinking. Kennedy Town Catchick Street neighbors, Catch and Mamma Malouf were yummy. I feel like there is a Catch everywhere (NY, HK and now LA – I went there in March!).
ON Dining Kitchen and Lounge, Onegroni version #2 concoction is rested in a 4L original Giancarlo Mancino clay pot for at least one week before being batched in bottles, thus heightening their flavour. It was SO good.
The Japanese izakaya, Yardbird, takes no reservations and has limited quantities of menu items, thereby creating a warranted demand. It’s all about chicken here, and different cuts are grilled over traditional Binchotan charcoal. Yardbird is so popular, they now had a pop up with the beautiful hotel, The Upper House. At Café Gray Deluxe (Upper House’s 49th floor restaurant), upon recommendation I had the famous Earl Gray Martini.
I know that Hong Kong is a shopper’s paradise – but rather than spend money on some luxury good. I came home with some athleisure clothes from Caleum Green and this bright green embroidered sweater that replaced this Gucci 6K sweater that I lusted after for the longest time.
I luckily and two wonderful massages on my trip – one at the Skin Gym, on Wyndham Street. My full body massage ironed out all my airplane kinks and left me in a peaceful slumber. The second was at the (Forbes Travel Guide 2017) beautiful Oriental Spa at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental.
A great intro trip to Hong Kong, with a few surprises along the way.

This roundup was online for a few outlets, but made it in print for RESIDENT magazine’s Feb issue.
ELENA:)
I can’t believe that I am so behind on all my posts. That’s ok. This one will be short as this was a brief trip to NY and I actually did not stay in any new hotels.
The first two nights I stayed over with the founder of LifeTold in Queens. A bit of a trek from the city, but still a great visit. After spending a leisurely weekend getting nails done (PaintBox), brunch at Balthazar and shopping, I stacked up my meetings (as per usual) for Monday and headed over to my other friends apartment in the city.
After making a crucial trip to Caravan Stylist studio I was ready to meet and greet! Later in the night I attended three fun holiday parties: RESIDENT Magazine, Fairmont Gold party (possibly this best party I have ever attended in my entire life!) and this real estate broker party (which definitely showed a different side to New York).
The next day, after a interview shoot with T’Zikal (see the interview on my News & Events page) I went to the BELLA NY holiday party which was also very fun.
I headed home to spend the rest of Dec. working away (clearly too busy to post this! Ha!).

It was such an honour to work with T’zikal for their campaign back in December. Here is a link to the interview that I did which was so much fun.

As the weather changes and I pull out my winter coat, I think fondly – not too long ago I was in Bali enjoying my latest favorite spa treatment. The cream hair massage is super. Imagine having a scalp massage for an hour, while your hair is covered in fresh coconut cream and different fresh spices. Needless to say, I had the treatment three different times on my trip. It was incredible.
At home, I struggle to find something remotely similar to the wonderful aromatic treatment I had abroad. I’m hard pressed to find a fresh, ripe coconut ready to be cracked open for my hair treatment at the local grocery and no freshly picked spices at my disposable to build my concoction. In fact, it’s hard to find beauty products on the market that are made without other additives, artificial colors and dyes. It’s nice to see that the use of simple ingredients and traditional techniques can yield fantastic results.
The T’zikal (derived from the Mayan word meaning sanctified or blessed) Beauty Group from New York City follows such suit by using Ojon oil, from the fruit of Palm Nut Tree. A single tree yields 8,000 nuts which is just enough to produce three cups of pure oil. Once the nut is cracked open, its boiled in a kettle for 5-7 hours and the oil is extracted. What’s so special about Ojon oil anyway? Its nutrient rich in omega oils which help replenish and rebuild hair, leaving it extraordinarily soft and shiny.
On my trip to New York, I got to experience the T’zikal collection first hand and have some fun things in store. Be sure to stay tuned and for more information and where to purchase T’zikal products visit their site.

Where do I begin? This was literally a last minute (two week turnover from decision to flight) to depart to Bali. My cousin had invited me to go back in July when I went to SF. In Aug, I made I quick trip to NY and when I came back the opportunity re-presented itself and I decided to take it.
You would think that 2 weeks before a trip 15 hours away would be at a huge cost. In fact, it was half price thanks to China Southern Airlines. So on Sept 11 I left Vancouver on a 19-hour trip and finally on Tuesday Sept 13 at 2am I arrived in Denpasar, Bali.
A quick 25 min taxi ride to my hotel, Tijili Seminyak. 15 years ago, I had stayed in Kuta but now Seminyak was the place to be. A 5 min walk to the beach, Tijili Seminyak is a colourful and well-designed hotel not even a year old. The breakfasts were yummy and I wish the sun came out while I was there so I could have taken full advantage of the pool.
I stayed at the Tijili for two nights while I roamed around and finally got my bearings. I managed to kick off the trip with a spa treatment at the Praya Spa where I had the Bali Mystique treatment. It included a footbath, full body scrub, full body massage, warm yogurt masque and then rose and frangipani bath. It was the perfect activity to kick off the trip. After making my way back to the hotel, I thought I was only going to take a quick nap – but ended up sleeping the majority of the night.
The next day I headed north to Ubud where I met up with a coworkers brother at his shop (Jamusara) and checked out some local fare before I had a short Flytographer photo shoot amongst the traditional Balinese temples. The Ubud market had some great finds and I knew I would have to be back later in the trip to pick up some finds.
The one thing I forgot in 15 years was how long it takes to get from A-B (almost everything takes 1-1.5 hours) due to traffic.
Thursday-Saturday was spent in Nusa Dua, which is an area on the eastern side of the island filled with resorts. The Ayodya served as the home base as we did some touristy visits on Thursday (Kintamani volcano, a coffee plantation, a traditional Barong and Kris dance).
Friday’s visit to the northern Bali, Munduk Moding Plantation was my favorite visit though. The 6-hectare plantation was beautiful and I learned a lot about the species grown: coffee, flowers, spices and fruits. Fun fact: you can actually stay at the plantation in a suite/villa and they also have an onsite spa. I would definitely recommend the informative visit and if you can, stay a night or two.
The wedding I attended was on Saturday and the reception was in a beautiful coconut grove. Sunday, we headed over to the neighboring island of Lombok. I was really excited to stay at the Puri Mas Boutique resort and spa and it definitely did not disappoint.
My beautiful Jacuzzi villa was massive complete with a four post bed, soaker tub and cathedral ceilings. I loved that although it was a villa – the bedroom was enclosed allowing the A/C to work affectivity. Also, I would have freaked out if I were night bait for mosquitos.
On our first day we took it to the seas as we explored the Gili Islands. The Gili Islands are a group of 3 tiny islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. I got over my fear of snorkeling (thanks to my cousins lessons) and saw huge schools of fish in vibrant colours. Lunch was BBQ on the beach, which was the end to a great day.
The following day after breakfast I was able to grab a last minute massage and coconut hair treatment at the spa at the Puri Mas Boutique Hotel before I left for the airport. 24 hours later and I was back in lovely Vancouver.
ELENA:)
I’m 4 hours down in a 19 hour flight. I’m heading in the opposite direction I usually head (NYC). I’ve enjoyed watching my favourite fashionistas and bloggers share their IG memories and Snaps for fashion week and I kind of wish I was there! I always seem to miss fashion week for Sept.
The weather has hopefully cooled off from the August’s heat wave, when I stayed at the brand new HGU New York. HGU stands for Hotel Grand Union and it definitely lives up to its grandeur.
The boutique hotel in the NoMad area boasts 90 guest rooms with both style and comfort in mind. I’m in love with all the Frette linen used (pillows, sheets and towels) in the room. (Added bonus – you can request the type of pillow support to aid in your sleep). The grey and white room decor with soft lighting is soothing on the eyes and helped when I had a relaxing/sun shielding 90 min in room massage from Soothe.
I can’t wait to see the roof top (opens summer 2017) and to check out the in house restaurant which opens in the fall of this year. The 1905 Lounge is building upon their weekly events and is hosting some great private functions for fashion week. I love the original ceilings, large sofas and artwork that adorn the intimate and welcoming space.
I can’t say enough about how convenient the location is – on East 32nd in between Park and Madison. It’s not entirely Midtown, but close enough to get downtown in a jiffy if need be. It’s also quiet to assure that you recharge and get a good nights sleep (again – big honourable mention to that linen!)
If you are looking for a hotel with the convenience that doesn’t compromise on comfort, style and design look no further than HGU New York.
ELENA:)
Remember that SF stop over I did in July?
Here is the City Guide I curated for RESIDENT magazine.
ELENA:)
As September approaches, there is a faint smell of new stationary and new clothes that fills the fall air and warms my heart. I love fashion, so I can shop at any time and that’s what I plan to do this weekend in NYC (if i can survive the heat!).
New York is known as a one of the greatest fashion cities in the world, and as people consume over 80 billion pieces of clothing each year; the clothing industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters.
Did you know that it can take over 700 gallons of water to make one cotton T-shirt? That’s a crazy amount of water just to make one t-shirt.
I’m partial to my super soft T-shirts that have been worn in myself. They are great to sleep in and they always fit just right. You can get the same, soft appeal from a thrifted shirt (at the fraction of the price too).
The campaign #IGIVEASHIRT, Value Village challenges 1 million people to choose a thrifted T-shirt over a new one to save over a 1,000 Olympic Sized Swimming Pools worth of water!
That’s huge! To help spread awareness of the cause, you can join me at the Vancouver Aquarium for an art installation on August 17 and show that you give a sh!rt about your clothing footprint.
Check out this video of the installation.
ELENA:)
I spent a few days collecting writing material for my next piece for RESIDENT magazine – a city guide on SF. I stayed at the Hotel Vetta, which was an amazing location. Steps from the train and the cable car without being overly loud.
I checked out the new and improved SFMOMA (coupled with Detour) and SPiN. Eating is never an issue, and I check out really great fare at ATwaterTavern (Seafood) and the Americano (Italian) restaurant.
I forgot just how many hills there are in SF – but walking around definitely helped not being in the gym for a week. Unfortunately, I missed Mr. Holmes Bakehouse, but my cousin introduced me to Blue Bottle Coffee (which was delicious).
ELENA:)
I generally don’t love San Diego, as I find it a bit sleepy. That aside, I was there for a conference for nursing work. I actually had my first research poster as part of the conference, which was the main reason I was there. But being fresh from NY a week before, I had 4 days to get the poster set. I got it done though and I was happy with the outcome.
Besides the conference, I managed to get my fill of some really great food which included Oscars, Juniper and Ivy and Extraordinary Desserts.
After the conference, I headed north to San Fransisco for a few days.
ELENA:)
I realize that this is SO late and since I will be back to NY next week this seems kind of silly to update you on the my meanderings. I rather just show you in photos what I was up to, but since I hardly Instagrammed as I was so busy – here is a quick run down.
Wednesday – Checked into the Renwick, which is clearly becoming my home away from home. If you remembered, I stayed here last December and I wrote about it for RESIDENT magazine. I got to stay in a beautiful suite that had a great living space. So pretty.
Thursday – Meetings at Hearst with Cosmo and O Magazine. Here is a quick story on how I scored an umbrella that saved my well-thought out outfit (I was on the hunt for a week before developing the perfect outfit driving a few friends crazy). I was on route from Columbus circle to Hearst when it started to pour, I ducked into a building alcove and I approached two guys, one was carrying an umbrella. I asked them if i could buy their umbrella for $25, and the guy said, “This is a $35-45 umbrella and I really like it.” I thanked them and spotted two ladies walking down the street. I ducked under one of their umbrellas and I said, “Lets keep walking, I need to tell you a story… I wrote this book… I have a big meeting… Clearly I’m not prepared.” By the end of the block the lady gave me her umbrella. SO FANTASTIC.
When I got to Hearst I realized that I did not have my ID. Again the security guard came through after I went into my soliloquy of who I was and why I was there.
Friday – Two morning meetings. It’s always great to put the face to the name. And lunch and dinner catch ups.
Saturday – I did a lot more catch up with old friends.
Sunday – I went to a TechStyle NYC event in a cool townhouse where I was introduced to a few brands like Heisel. They are company using new technologies to create clothing. I was given reflective thread and I still am deciding on what I can use it to decorate.
After a whirlwind time in NY, I went back home for 4 days and prepared for a conference in San Diego….

Back at the end of April, I collaborated with 3 online publications including BELLA LA, BELLA NY and The Trend’N Female Magazine to trial Victoria Taylor Hair Extensions and create the perfect summer braid.
One early Sunday, EIC, Nicola of TTFMag filmed a step by step video with the help of hair stylist/MUA Bianca Bruno and Meech (trusty camera guy). Check out the video here.
In conjunction with the video, a written article was posted as well. Read it here.
I had so much fun with this collaboration and I can’t wait for another!

I can’t believe its’ been a month since I was in New York. Time definitely flies by…
I checked into the Q&A Residential Hotel on the Saturday evening to be welcomed to one of the largest hotel suites I have ever stayed in the city. The last time I stayed in the quiet financial district area was 5 years ago, so I was curious to see how the area changed. That night, I settled in by walking around the area – the subway and the huge Duane Reade was across the street. I can’t sing the praises of free strong Wi-Fi and fridge that could hold my Invo Coconut Water for the Sunday morning shoot.
Read my article for RESIDENT Magazine on Q&A Residential Hotel here.
Sunday morning, I had a great time with Bianca Bruno and Nicky Styles (editor from The Trend’n Female) shooting a how-to braiding guide complete with Victoria Hair clip on extensions. I’ve never had extensions before so I was quite curious to see how well they would blend into my own hair. It turned out perfect! They were not heavy at all and easy to take out at the end of the day.
Stay tuned for the How-To Braid guide in BELLA LA and BELLA NYC coming out soon.
After the video shoot, we met up with some friends and had brunch at Gentilly, a new spot in the West Village. I had a great tofu scramble and got schooled on three different ways on how to drink rose courtesy of Maison Marcel. It was great reuniting with Caitlyn from Tease Tea and picking up my favourite Earl Grey tea. My plans fell through for Burger & Lobster that night as well as my attempt to have chicken wings at Pok Pok – so I’ll have to put that on the list for next time.
The next two days were FULL of meetings:
I surprised myself not taking a cab even once! Google Maps is my new favorite friend. The biggest surprise of Monday was meeting Britney Spears’ first tour manager tied with being asked to write a pro Trump article for a magazine for $200 later that night.
Tuesday’s meetings were scheduled back-to-back and being caught in the rain was an unwelcomed surprise. I stopped by CINER to check out some new fashion jewelry and visit the lovely ladies. My friend, Lexicon of Style introduced me to a café called Culture Espresso that had cute wallpaper and fabulous décor. Rare for Midtown. Tuesday night ended by meeting Susan Mallery, NY Times #1 Best–Seller who was launching a romance novel entitled, Best of My Love.
I had two impromptu meetings on Wednesday, pre flight home. I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful shared working space of Neuehouse. I loved the Restoration Hardware meets NYPL vibe. Such an inspiring space. I grabbed a quick lunch with a friend at Back Forty West before heading back to the hotel to grab my luggage and a package that had arrived in the nick of time before my Luxury Car Ride swept me off to LGA.
