Thrive: The Fruit of Resiliency

April 19, 2021

It’s such a humbling experience to write something and then get it rejected. Only for you to re-write a better piece. Here is my piece with Citizens of Soil and Nudo Adopt for Thrive Global.

Travelling with eyes wide open – A collection of thoughts

May 26, 2019

Here is the piece I wrote about my whirlwind trip to Israel in April. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to travel with the Bnai Zion Foundation and summarized it in this Thrive Global article.

Interview with Authority Magazine

February 27, 2019

I did this interview a while back and had no idea it went live on both Medium and Thrive Global. I re-read the piece and I thought, gosh that girl sounds awfully wise!

I initially was not interested in going to the DMZ I initially was not interested in going to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), but so glad I changed my mind. Our guide was extremely passionate and wanted us to be grateful for our freedom. The reality of the situation was so heartbreaking and emotional. 😢

Our guide told us about her grandma who reunited with her son after ~ 50 years after through a government lottery system to reunite family members across Korea. Her son was taken from her when he was about 10 years old they had 11 hours together to catch up. Shortly after that reunion, her grandma passed away. 💔

At Imjingak (7 km from the Military Demarkation Line) we saw:
* The Peace Bell
* A memorial to young Korean women who were victims of the Japanese military’s wartime SA known as Comfort Women. There are only five or six original Korean comfort women left.
* The “Bridge of Freedom” (also known as the Imjingak Dokgae Bridge) A former railroad bridge on the Imjin River that was used for changing POWs after the Korean War.

Then we walked into the 3rd tunnel. This is one of 4 N Korean tunnels that were discovered, with the help of the engineer who built them. The tunnel height is probably 5”4.

South Korean military has resumed loudspeaker broadcasts directed at N Korea as a form of psychological warfare, in response to N Korea’s sending trash balloons across the border. These loudspeakers are strategically placed to reach areas within North Korea. Part of the Dora Observatory was closed as there were threats to shoot anyone they could see. Outside the building you can hear faint music/content coming from the speakers (it’s that loud/and we are that close). Would you visit the DMZ?

Seoul is a foodie paradise. One of the best ways t Seoul is a foodie paradise. One of the best ways to try a little bit of everything is to go on a night market tour. I did just that - while also learning how to play the drinking game APT, and how to make a Soju bomb with beer. 🍻

Here’s what I had on the tour of Gwangjang market:

1. Mayak kimbap (Addictive Kimbap ft. Perilla leaves)
2. Tteokbokki (Spicy Rice Cakes)
3. Kimchi Mandu / Gogi Mandu (Kimchi Dumpling / Pork Dumpling) / Kalguksu (Knife Cut Noodle) / Keolmyeongja Tea (Cassia Seed Tea)
4. Banchan (Korean side dish) / Nakjijeot (Salted Mini octopus), Ssalgae (Marinated Mini Crab) / Maneul Chojeolim (Pickled Garlic), Choseokjang (Pickled Chinese Artichoke Root)
5. Nokdu bean-dae-dduck (Mungbean Pancake)
6. Gogi-Wanja (Meatball Pancake)
7. Yuk-Hwae (Raw Beef/Beef Tartar)
8. San-nak-ji (Live Octopus)
9. Makgeolli (Korean traditional rice wine)
10. Soju / maekju (Beer) / Somac ( Soju Bomb)
11. Kkwa-bae-gi (Twisted Donut)
12. Bulgogi (Marinated Beef)

‘Plastic Vaccine’, 2021 Seoul Public Design Co ‘Plastic Vaccine’, 2021 Seoul Public Design Contest Award winning installation on the steps of the @ddp_seoul

Translated Description:
Due to the prolonged COVID-19, household waste and carbon dioxide emissions such as disposable plastic are increasing rapidly. As various forms of attempts are needed to awaken the importance of resource recycling, we proposed a public facility design that recycles plastic.

The bench, which is divided into pipe shape, does not block the gaze and movement of citizens who visit Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and is designed so that they can be used freely regardless of people’s physical conditions according to the height of the stairs.

For safety reasons, this work was made by changing the material from recycled plastic to metal.
